Entertainment ideas for a murder mystery party about immortals going to their annual costume ball?

I’m worried about the party lagging in the beginning since usually the atmosphere at any party is awkward at first. So I really need some ideas for little things they can do besides walking around and talking to each other. I don’t want it to be a big deal that takes up all their time since they should mostly be talking to the other characters but I just want something. I’m going to have a room dedicated to music and dancing but I don’t know how much that will get used.
