Who are 10 CURRENT great murder mystery authors?

February 26, 2009 · Filed Under Books & Authors

T M asked:

I’m trying to find murder mysteries that had real research put into them. I don’t want to read stuff that is so far from reality that I lose interest. I recently read The Voice of the Violin by Andrea Camilleri. This book is teeerrrriiibbblleee. Please tell me of some great and CURRENT murder mystery authors.

Thank you.

Lois Duncan is amazing; I’ve read many of her books. I especially liked I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Third Eye, though Down a Dark Hall, Locked in Time, etc. were okay.

Her books use lots of imagery and the conclusions are based on fact/research (especially The Third Eye and Down a Dark Hall). They only bad thing about them is that because they are so grabbing and creepy, sometimes I found it hard to sleep at night, which is why I read each book in 1-3 days (never at night! :))

I’ve stopped reading her books now just because 1) I’ve become absorbed in classics, 2) I know what to anticipate in her books: foreshadowing, goosebumps, a somewhat cliffhanger conclusion, and possibly a few nights with bad dreams. :) But otherwise her books are incredible; give the first two I mentioned a try! The first is like a murder mystery and in the second, babies are mysteriously kidnapped and a psychic girl has to decide whether or not to help find them…(if she decides to use her psychic skills then she might be classified as a “weirdo” forever…)

I also LOVE the Sherlock Holmes series, even though they aren’t exactly modern mysteries. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle isn’t a current mystery author, but his stories are always based on fact and quick deductions made by Holmes. :) Those books are great as well!
