I know there are no ballistics, but can they trace spray patterns?

Some shotgun barrels have rifling and fire slugs. Those would be, speaking in ballistics, the same as a handgun or rifle with lands and grooves in the projectile.

You got me on how they do it if it was buckshot out a smooth bore barrel.

They don’t go looking for marks on the shot pellets, what they do if they find spent casings, is compare those to the suspect shotgun which they believed fired the rounds.

You just need to watch CSI, they can prove who let the fart or who picked their nose last.

There has to be additional evidence such as an empty shotgun shell at the crime scene or that can be linked to the crime scene. The impression made by the weapon’s hammer can be compared with a later test firing.

There is also the possibility that the suspect could have traces of gunpowder residue on his/her person. Gunpowder is specific to different manufacturers and an analysis is possible.
