Murder court case involving military officers?

I don’t know if it’s happened, but if so I need to know. Can anyone tell me whether or not there has ever been a court case accusing a member of the armed forces of the murder of an innocent whose death was necessary to complete their assignment? (That sentence may have been confusing…sorry. Can’t think of another way to word it.) And if there has been one, could you provide any and all details you know or a link to a website somewhere with it?

Look up information on Lt. Calley and the My Lai massacre. This happened during the Vietnam War.

I know of the marines who went into a masque during the battle for Falusia they chasing insurgents. the insurgents were hiding among innocent people and the marines started killing every body. one of the major news stations who were documenting actually got it on tape. I dont think it was “necessary to complete their assignment” and the marines were tried and cleared in a court of law.

I do know of a case (I forget if the soldier is American or Canadian) of a soldier allegedly shooting an unarmed insurgent with the intent to kill, and he is being charged with murder.
