Do you think a time will come when war and murder go extinct?

May 4, 2010 · Filed Under Philosophy

Madd Hatter asked:

It seems to me that a logical, albeit miraculous, progression of the Human species would be to stop killing one another. I suppose there would need to be a trigger for an international peace to exist, maybe some common danger to Humanity. What do you think?

nope man. As long as people want something or some privilege somebody else has and they figure the only way to get what they want is by killing, they will still kill. Unfortunately, some people will never evolve past that simple law of nature. It would be nice if everyone could, but there are some that will always stomp out whomever they can to get to the top of the food chain.

Every organism I can think of fights other organisms for resources. From unicellular, up through plants, to animals. An event like you are talking about would have to be huge to cut across religious, national & racial boundaries.

Nothing short of a hostile alien invasion could unify mankind to the extent that people stopped killing each other. In other words, people will always kill each other over something.

There are 2 universal crimes found in every human society: theft and murder.

Since we inherently know these two acts are socially unacceptable and yet they occur in every society, my conclusion is, unfortunately, no. Murders will continue to happen as long as there is “sin” or “crime” of any kind.

…and isn’t it our very flaws that make us human?

I wish it weren’t the case, but murder, and therefore war will always be a part of the human experience.

Yeah but we won’t do it ourselves trust me.
The only time we will come to grips with peace, love and understanding is when the Christ returns to stay.
But before that, all news is bad news. We can’t do it alone.

Yes, there will be a time when war and murder become virtually extinct.

Some of the popular philosophy in recent centuries has concluded that man is basically competitive and will continually conquer. One only needs to look at history to see that this has repeated itself continuously over time. So many have concluded that this is true, which makes it a self-fullfilling prophecy. For what does one do when they believe that man will always murder and go to war? They create defenses, they infiltrate their enemy, they overthrow governments, they interfere with civil liberties, they dispel justice, they preemptively invade, etc.

So for war and murder to become extinct, we must believe that man is capable of evolution… that when man understands that, unlike in the jungle, we can provide for all of mankind, we don’t have to war with each other. We need to believe that man is not naturally competitive … but that some men are naturally competitive. That is all that we have to control.

Take business for example. How many people do you know in business who approach it as “dog eat dog?” I suggest that not many. Indeed there are some in the minority who pursue conquest and aggregation. But the majority of people are not naturally competitive. What we need to do is effectively curb those who are, those that engage in conquest at the expense of the whole.

There will be murder by those imbalanced. That too, perhaps, can be handled through medication in time. But the amount of murder from imbalance is likely very low. It seems that most murder results from some form of rage triggered by extraneous influence — drugs, alchohol, crime of passion, etc.

For there to be no war or murder, there would need to be a peaceful leviathan entity, such as a United Nations, that must keep peace. The cost of not being peaceful must be so great that no nation would choose it. Within nations, the cost of committing crime must be too great for individuals to choose it, particularly organized or premeditated crime.

But to answer your question, yes, I believe that we can evolve to a world without war and murder, but for it to occur, we all have to believe that it is possible. We need to reverse the evils of philosophies in the world, including our own country (my country in U.S), that currently creates disorder and turmoil in an effort to control the world. This view, held by many, is a slippery slope. We must stop trying to control the outcomes of nations throughout the world and work within the United Nations or another league of nations to create a more peaceful world where all can better co-habitate.

Some will say, “there goes another idealist.” Yet, I believe in strong defense. I believe in severe penalties for non-compliance with international sentiment. And I believe that in the current environment, there are people in the world who want to hurt others… and that justice is of paramount importance.
