The assassination gave Austria-Hungary the opportunity to try to limit the growing power of Serbia. Serbia had just recently won 2 regional wars, and now Austria-Hungary was being threatened that its Serbian population was wanting to up-rise. Austria-Hungary basically gave an ultimatum that would leave Serbia being controlled by Austria-Hungary.
Everybody thought it would just be another regional conflict, but Germany got involved in egging on Austria-Hungary. Russia backed Serbia, and Russia had a treaty with France that if one was attacked, both would fight. Nobody wanted war, but nobody wanted to back down first.
Austria hits Serbia,
Germany hits France (through Belgium which brought in Great Britain)
Russia hits Germany.
And the war is on.

The murder was organised by the head of the Serb secret services and performed by a group of Serbs (all were identified and some caught)
Austria demanded an apology and an investigation (not unreasonable under the circumstances). Serbia - with the backing of Russia- rejected the idea of investigation and refused any apology. Austria came back with an ultimatum- which Serbia rejected. And the war was on.
