Why do some people think abortion is murder?

February 24, 2010 · Filed Under Pregnancy

That one guy asked:

before you scream to me,”BECAUSE IT IS!!”let me say my point of view.
First, the US supreme court declared that getting an abortion is constituionaly protected right.
Second, fetuses cannot feel pain, have no sentience, and,in fact have none of the sensations humans have.So in my opinion, killing a fetus is like killing grass:niether know that it ever happened.and in fact they cant even tell it happened.
Third, what about when the baby is nothing more than a jumble of cells.humans are killing cells all the time,so why dont we call this murder? And since we dont, then killing a baby in the cellular stage would not be considered murder.
please dont call me a jackass.I have thought this through and this is what i think.and are you saying a living thing has to have a heartbeat?the majority of all living things dont.
ok no more religious people answer this question anymore.i want open-minded people!!!not one-sided arguments against abortion.!
please stop cursing at me

You have no repect for life.. it gets a heartbeat at 6 weeks therefore it’s a living thing…
We are a jumble of cells but we are living things.
You need to sort out your priorities and see it from a life respecting point of view, ya jcka$$

Because it has a hearbeat. Anything that has a heartbeat is a living thing. Anything you kill that is a living thing is murder. Why would it be any different with a fetus? A baby does not ask to be born. It deserves a chance. If people dont want a baby, dont have unprotected sex.

Have you ever been pregnant? I have, and Even when he was just a few weeks old in my womb still at a legally “abortable stage”, I heard his little heartbeat and it was the most amazing miracle I have ever heard. When I saw him on the ultrasound monitor, all I can think of is how lucky I was that God gave me this wonderful life. It’s an awesome responsibility. Just because he couldn’t talk or walk yet, doesn’t mean he was insignificant. He was and is this amazing creation and needs to be protected. I thank God my mom didn’t abort me, and you should thank God the you had the same fortune. I am sorry you can’t see how prcious and amazing that little life is. Just because it’s tiny, doesn’t mean it’s not incredible!

I am for abortion for the following reasons:

1.If there is something bad wrong with the baby and it would suffer anyhow by being handicapped or deformed

    2.If someone was raped

3.If the mother’s life was in danger of carrying the baby

What i think abortion should not be used as is BIRTH CONROL
when people should be using condoms/spermicide and birth control in the first place if they are not wanting to become pregnant.

I agree if it was murder then they wouldn’t be abortion clinics anywhere’s

That child or “fetus” is a living growing being. Many say that it is the woman’s choice but it was the woman’s choice to fool around with the guy. I don’t understand how some people thing capital punishment is wrong but believe abortion is alright. With the death sentence the criminal probably did something to deserve their death but an unborn child has done nothing wrong. Give the child a chance. If the mother does not want the child then she can give it up for adoption. It is 9 months out of the woman’s life to have the child and give it up but it is the whole child’s life that is ruined with abortion. What happened to the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Why are you putting down religious people? I don’t think of myself as religious rather I think of myself as someone with a relationship with my creator. It is ok if you don’t believe how other’s believe but do not put them down.

The person answered after me that if you remove the fetus from the womb it will die, well what would happen if you take a 1,2, ro 3 year old from their mother or any other adult. They would die because they are dependent on others also. So is it ok to kill them if we don’t want them? Just a question to ponder.

I agree. Not everything that is killed is murder. A person answering previously brought up that a fetus gets a heartbeat at six weeks. Even though the baby has a heart, it doesn’t have lungs or other vital organs. If you were to remove it from the mother instead of kill it , it would still die. And although we respect and honor the essence of life, what can we do for the quality of life for the child of a woman who never wanted it.

Your right about being a bunch of cells…but thats only in the very beginning. Not that long after, it gets a heartbeat, and everything else…just like a human being…so I think it is wrong to have an abortion, unless you have been raped, or you or your unborn childs life is in danger, or if something is really wrong with the baby as to where it wouldn’t have a good life if it were born. So my answer to your question…is yes, it is murder. They do feel, they do sense…it makes me sad to know that women go and have sex, and then don’t want to deal with the results of being pregnant, and go kill it, and not even give it a chance.
I am a mother of two. I disagree with abortion…unless the circumstances I listed above come into play.

Because at the moment of conception, the baby has a soul.

    And…
Just because Western Medicine does not detect a heart beat until 6 weeks, does not mean the baby does not have one. Scientists only know a minute fraction of what is reality.

first The fetus can feel pain at 20 weeks, grass has no heartbeat a fetus has a heartbeat at 5weeks, im 36 weeks pregnant right now actully and my baby has the hiccups, and is also kicking, grass doesn’t kick and get the hiccups, so its way different to having an abortion and killing f*cking grass, wat about if ur mother aborted her pregnancy while pregnant with u, you wouldn’t be here today saying this bull sh i t. Yeh i agree that woman have a right to terminate their pregnancy if they want to its their choice, but when it comes to pregnancy a cell turns into a fetus which turn into a newborn which turns in to a child which turns into a teen then an adult there for its a being, it has a brain, it has a heartbeat, it moves,it kicks it gets the hiccups and believe it or not it actully cries in the womb aswell, therefore its alive, i’d like to see grass do any of that. why not check these sites out about little samual, about a boy who grabed the hand of a doc when only been in the womb for 21weeks and is today like 7 years old

If you’re really looking for an answer to that question, it’s complicated and depends on the person. Believe it or not, this isn’t a new concept - the ancient Greek philosophers even debated this.

What it really hinges on is what you define as the beginning of life. For example, if you go by the ability to survive outside the womb, I’ve heard courts say about 20 wks gestation. Medical science says about 24 wks. The down shot to this particular frame of reference is that, with the advances of medicine, that time frame has and will continue to be pushed back farther and farther.

On the other hand, there’s the school of thought that life begins at conception - one held by many religious groups but not necessarily limited to them. Because the Zygote (the first stage) has all of the *potential* to become an entire human being, it is felt that it should be treated as such.

There’s also been a lot done to try to find a middle ground, so to speak, in this area. The one I always found the most interesting was the concept of the “moment of twinning.” The idea is, there’s a certain period of time up to which a Zygote can be either one person or two (twins - of course, triplets and on up count too). Before this point abortion is acceptable because the person(s) have not yet been determined. So, going by this philosophy, the morning after pill is fine, while abortion after 2 or 3 weeks is not.

whoa- like GRASS? Good thing your folks did not feel that way, huh?
Heart Beat-At 18 days [when the mother is only four days late for her first menstrual period], and by 21 days it is pumping, through a closed circulatory system, blood whose type is different from that of the mother. J.M. Tanner, G. R. Taylor, and the Editors of Time-Life Books, Growth, New York: Life Science Library, 1965, p.

    When is the brain functioning?

Brain waves have been recorded at 40 days on the Electroencephalogram (EEG). H. Hamlin, “Life or Death by EEG,” JAMA, Oct. 12, 1964, p. 120

Brain function, as measured on the Electroencephalogram, “appears to be reliably present in the fetus at about eight weeks gestation,” or six weeks after conception. J. Goldenring, “Development of the Fetal Brain,” New England Jour. of Med., Aug. 26, 1982, p. 564
When and where does fertilization occur?

Sperm enter the woman’s vagina, swim through the cavity of her uterus and out through her Fallopian tubes. This can take as brief a time as five minutes to pass through the uterus and reach the tubes, and as brief as another 15 minutes to pass through the tubes and reach the ovaries. The egg, breaking out of the shell of her ovary, is penetrated by the head of one spermatozoa. Immediately the ovum creates a chemical or electrical charge or fence preventing other sperm from entering.

The pronucleus of the sperm, containing its 23 chromosomes, in about 12 hours migrates to meet the ovum’s pronucleus with its 23 chromosomes. Their fusion takes about 2 hours.

Then in another 18 hours this 46 chromosome nucleus divides into two cells.

Then into 3 cells at which time some new opinion believes the “decision” is made to stay single or pro-gram to divide into twins.

Then to 4 cells, to 8, to 16 and on and on. Jones and Schraeder, “The Process of Human Fertilization,” Fertility and Sterility, vol. 48, no. 2, Aug. 1987, p. 191 Word Wars, E. Diamond, Physician, Nov. 1992, Pp. 14-15 Personal Communication, J. Lejeune 1994

What is this “moment of conception” bit?

Most use the moment of sperm penetration as the “moment of conception.” Others wait until their pronuclei fuse at 12-14 hours to say conception is a completed process. In either case this new human life is complete at the first cell stage.

This is then only a single cell?

Yes. But a remarkable and unique one. This single cell is now either male or female. This human is unique, i.e., never before in the history of the world has this exact individual human existed. Never again in history will another exactly like this human exist.

This being is complete, i.e., nothing else — no bits or pieces — will be added from this time until the old man or woman dies — nothing but nutrition and oxy-gen. This being is programmed from within, moving for-ward in a self-controlled, ongoing process of growth, development, and replacement of his or her own dying cells.

This living being is dependent upon his or her mother for shelter and food, but in all other respects is a to-tally new, different, unique, and independent being.

    How does it grow?

This single celled human being divides into two cells, each containing the same total and identical DNA message, the same total contents. Two becomes three, three becomes four, then eight, sixteen, etc., as it moves down the Fallopian tube. Ultimately, each human being’s body contains 30 million cells. When sufficient cells are present, organ formation, body structure, and function begins. Cell doubling occurs only 45 times. That timing is as follows:
    CELL DOUBLINGS BY AGE PERCENTAGE
    8 by implantation 18%
    30 by 8 weeks 66%
    41 by birth 91%
    44 by kindergarten 98%
    45 by adulthood 100%
    A. W. Liley, The Tiniest Humans CA: Sassone Press, p. 14

We must conclude then that each individual human life begins at the beginning, at fertilization, and that human life is a continuum from that time until death.

What simple measure would you use to define Human Life?

    We would ask:

Is this being alive? Yes. He has the characteristics of life. That is, he can reproduce his own cells and develop them into a specific pattern of maturity and function. Or more simply, he is not dead.

Is this being human? Yes. This is a unique being, distinguishable totally from any other living organism, completely human in all of his or her characteristics, including the 46 human chromosomes, and can develop only into a fully mature human.

Is this being complete? Yes. Nothing new will be added from the time of union of sperm and egg until the death of the old man or woman except growth and development of what is already there at the beginning. All he needs is time to develop and mature.

Dr. Liley, who did the first fetal blood transfusion in the womb, said that seven days after fertilization: “. . . the young individual, in command of his environment and destiny with a tenacious purpose, implants in the spongy lining and with a display of physiological power, suppresses his mother’s menstrual period. This is his home for the next 270 days and to make it habitable, the embryo develops a placenta and a protective capsule of fluid for himself. He also solves, single-handed, the homograft problem, that dazzling feat by which foetus and mother, although immunological foreigners who could not exchange skin grafts nor safely receive blood from each other, never the less tolerate each other in parabiosis for nine months.

“We know that he moves with a delightful easy grace in his buoyant world, that foetal comfort deter-mines foetal position. He is responsive to pain and touch and cold and sound and light. He drinks his amniotic fluid, more if it is artificially sweetened, less it if is given an unpleasant taste. He gets hiccups and sucks his thumb. He wakes and sleeps. He gets bored with repetitive signals but can be taught to be alerted by a first signal for a second different one. And, finally, he determines his birthday, for unquestionably, the onset of labour is a unilateral decision of the foetus.

“This, then, is the fetus we know and, indeed, we each once were. This is the foetus we look after in modern obstetrics, the same baby we are caring for be-fore and after birth, who before birth can be ill and need diagnosis and treatment just like any other patient.

But what of the pregnant woman?

It should be obvious to everyone that there are two living humans involved: the unborn child and his mother. For this nation to once again protect its unborn babies, but not to do everything humanly possible to help the mother would be immoral. The woman with a problem pregnancy must, at the same time, be offered aid in solving her problems, to help her through that distressing time.

If in fact, her very life is threatened physically, then, the ideal is to save both. But if, in treating her, the fetal baby is lost, such may be an unfortunate result. Your authors have traveled nationally for 30 years lecturing on this subject, and we have yet to hear of a directly induced abortion needed to prevent her death. There are, of course, good reasons to deliver the baby and end her pregnancy in its late months, but here hopefully the baby is saved. Never in late pregnancy is it necessary to directly kill the baby by abortion. If her problem is something less than a threat to her life itself, then we cannot solve it by the ghastly violence of killing another innocent human life. The solutions for helping any individual woman are often many and complex, but they must be found and they must be used. Why can’t we love them both?

Think of this, If you murder a woman who is pregnant, you not only have 1 count of murder but 2. It’s kind of a double standard. I have 2 children. My first, I was 3 months along and with my second, i was 2 months. There are a lot of people that dont even know that they are pregnant for a couple or months.

3 weeks gestational-By the end of the third week of gestation (five weeks in menstrual age) the length of the embryo is about 1.5 to 2 millimeters long. All of your baby’s major organs are under development, and facial features, such as ears and eyes, begin to form.

4 weeks gestational-Your baby’s heart is now beating and blood circulation is evident. The kidneys and liver are growing fast, and the neural tube, which connects the brain with the spinal cord, closes.

Isn’t everything wit ha heartbeat living?

week 5-Dark spots, mark the early formation of the eyes. Pits indicate the formation of nostrils and ears. Your baby’s brain is developing rapidly, and limbs and facial characteristics are now forming. Your baby’s heart now has a right and left chamber. An ultrasound may be able to detect heart motion. The esophagus and trachea are changing and differentiating into separate tubes, with lungs positioned on either side

No one can really know if a fetus can feel pain unless they are the fetus. If Someone slapped you lightly and you felt a little pain, would your mother know that?

A baby is only a jumble of cells for a few days. Like I said before, I didn’t know I was pregnant until I was in my second trimester.

I’m not bashing anyone. This is just information in my pregnancy book.

Because most people think that a woman is getting an abortion because she got pregnant on accident. They don’t think that just maybe there’s a logical reason behind it. Most abortions are done when it’s just an embryo. It doesn’t have a brain and can’t feel what’s going on, so it’s not actually killing a living thing. Number two, they have their heads so far up their *sses they can’t even concieve other reasons why someone would have an abortion. I had one because in ‘99 I was raped and got pregnant as a result. As I walked into the clinic I had protesters screaming at me, and shoving their posters in my face. They don’t get the fact that yeah, a woman is getting an abortion, but it’s not easy for them to do it. It was the hardest decision I’ve EVER had to make. It’s something that does eat at me everyday. However, if I had to do it all over again, I would. In cases of molestation or rape, the depression is hard enough, being pregnant from it is just a constant reminder of what happened. I would’ve committed suicide if I carried to full term. Most pro-lifers will argue and say there’s always adoption if you don’t want the child. They don’t realize that there are thousands of children born each year who won’t grow up in a happy household because most people are looking for a specific type of child. Most children born with mental retardation and other health issues usually don’t find homes. I went to HS with a girl who was blind and grew up in foster homes because no one ever adopted her. Can people really think that’s a better life than not having one at all? The ones who do get placed often wonder where they came from, and still aren’t totally happy. I have a cousin who was adopted when he was a baby, and for the last 12 years has been trying to find his birth parents. He never has felt complete or totally happy. I hardly think that’s a life for a child to live. It turns them into dysfunctional adults. These people need to think of what really happens with their so called solutions. Cause just because a baby is born into this world doesn’t mean it’s better off than being aborted.

I don’t think that it is right. But i think that way because people should use it as a way to get out of something stupid they did to there self. Now if there is a liget reason like the mother is in great danger or she was raped those are the only reasons i can fathom that any one should/would give up a child. I was preg 3 times i didn’t want the second baby first child was only 5 months old but i had a miscarriage and that is when i realized every life is precious wither we want it or not. Now i am not going to put you down because you may think this way. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion. But like someone else said it shouldn’t be used as birth control that is just wrong no matter what way you cut it. And abortions can really hurt you if you decide you want children later in life.

I agree with you 100%, it doesn’t mean that I will ever get an abortion, but I believe in it. You never know the woman’s story as to why she is having one done… As long as she isn’t 20+ weeks along, unless she is risking her life (which would also kill the baby) then why not.

Okay……there are so many people that are going to reply hatefully to this topic. The presence of a heartbeat does not mean a thing as far as pain goes. The neural network to start to feel pain is not in place until week 20. I support a woman’s right to have an abortion should she want one….except for partial birth abortions (unless there is a sound medical reason). I should hope that if someone doesn’t want to get pregnant, she’ll use birth control. And if she does get pregnant, that she decides what to do by week 10 when it really is still pretty cellular in structure. I’d say opt for adoption but for so many women pregnancy isn’t an option, and our adoption system is flawed. So many kids spend years in foster homes getting bounced around….

And saying an abortion is the easy way to get out of being pregnant is just ignorant. Anyone that says that has obviously never had one. Even if you don’t want the baby, it is a potential baby and is very, very sad. Most women have emotional trauma after an abortion.

In the end, only the woman and her doctor can decide. It’s not for anyone else to judge.
